Birds, More Military Action & Fog

As I mentioned, ToG and a couple of other boats near us were overrun with barn swallows while docked at Blake Island Marine Park. We've had birds on the boat before but this was crazy! And lasted for hours. They were fun to watch but alas, you can guess the outcome. Yep...bird poop everywhere. Unfortunately, it wasn't just a quick rinse job to clean it off. The stuff actually stains the gel coat. We'll have to tackle that next time we have time to do a more thorough cleaning.

We watched yet more military action as a large ship was towed toward Bremerton.

We left Blake yesterday morning and were soon in a fog bank. Radar on, running lights on, get out of the shipping lane, slow down, all eyes on the water, is our horn working (not really)...just a few things running through my mind during the forty minutes or so we were in the worst of it. There was also a fair amount of debris in the water, making it even more challenging.

The flog cleared by the time we reached the Port Townsend Channel, a short passage separating the mainland from Indian Island. Unfortunately, even though we left very early to try and beat the current, it was still flowing strong through the channel and we used full power to get through.

We were unable to get space at Point Hudson Marina in Port Townsend, our preferred place to stay in the area, but Boat Haven had room for us. We took a walk into town where they are busy preparing for the upcoming Wooden Boat Festival.

Our plan is to cross the Strait of Juan de Fuca later this morning, timing it to enter Cattle Pass with the current. However...more fog! We are fairly comfortable with foggy conditions but crossing the strait is another matter. We'll see how it goes...
