Fisherman Bay
Sunrise over Fisherman Bay:
We had a lovely two nights in Fish Bay (as some locals call it), taking a couple of paddles and picnicking on the preserve spit.
On Wednesday, we noticed a boat approaching – it looked official and we wondered why it was headed our way while we were anchored. Then one of the people aboard said, “Need a pump out?” Turns out, it was the first day of the long-awaited pump out service boat for Lopez! We didn’t need the service but talked with them for a few minutes – great to see this in the bay.
Now…if only they’d put a dinghy dock in town!
Fall is definitely in the air. Temps are in the low 70’s, and there is a “coolth to the air” as my mom would say.
Garrison Bay
ToG arrived in Garrison Bay Thursday after a quick stop in Roche Harbor to pump out and get water. I snapped this shot of Helios at the marina – because I heard about this boat recently. See Laura Domela’s entertaining post here.
Speaking of good reads, there is an inspiring article in Maine Boats (I can't seem to grab the link - but try to look it up) about American Tug owners aboard Ancient Mariners. The name of the boat(s) is obvious – their combined age is 200!
We found plenty of room to anchor but boats continued to cruise in for Labor Day weekend. We expected it to be very crowded but many boats departed and on Sunday the bay was quite open.
We had some patchy fog – watched it trying to roll into Westcott Bay Friday, and we heard distant fog horns.
Nick dropped the crab trap as soon as we got there – got our limit (5) after two pulls. Delicious Dungeness for dinner! We’ve since limited again, so enough crab for now, including a delicious Louie salad, and then legs sauteed in butter and Old Bay.
We took the bikes to Friday Harbor, stopping at San Juan Vineyard on the way back. We had lunch at one of our long-time favorites, the Cask and Schooner. We heard this restaurant will close October 15. The hostess mentioned flood, fire and, of course, pandemic-related causes.
We had a day with some drizzle, and I’ve been turning the heat on in the morning.
Busy Rocher Harbor over Labor Day weekend:
Crab injury:
This morning, Tuesday 9/6, we moved from Garrison to Roche to anchor around the action for a couple of nights. Turns out our switch from Verizon to T Mobile involves a new Sim card, which is being shipped to Hotel de Haro and should arrive tomorrow. So, we’re staying close.
The huge Fluid Motion (Ranger Tugs & Cutwater Boats) annual rendezvous begins tomorrow, so we should see a lot of familiar boats and faces pull into the marina over the next couple of days. Plan is to move on to Friday Harbor Thursday.
