On Thursday, the four of us decided to check out Vancouver's renowned China Town for dinner. We caught a small harbour ferry from Granville Island and were on our way.
Nick and I have been a lot of places, but I'm not sure I've ever seen any area quite so awful in regard to homelessness, mental illness, and drug use. It was appalling...and hard to witness. The gate to China Town is in a sad state:
We have heard good things about this area but I guess that was many years ago. I hope the city of Vancouver can find a way to revitalize the neighborhood.
That said, we spotted a restaurant on the edge of the area called China Town BBQ that looked very nice. We made our way back to it after deciding we just didn't want to see any more. The place was fantastic!
We shared several plates of pork and chicken, plus fried rice and gai lan (Chinese broccolini).
Nick and Steve enjoyed this really good beer from 33 Acres Brewing in Vancouver, 33 Acres of Ocean:
It was a good outing even though Vancouver's China Town is hurting.
Yesterday was a little rainy but we managed a walk while the Z's took another bike ride.
Nick and I hopped back on a ferry and went to the Yaletown area for dinner at Fanny Bay Oyster Bar & Shellfish Market. Another splendid meal. The oysters were expertly shucked and presented, and the bubbly sake was a perfect pairing.
Both boats left early this morning, with the Z's helping us exit our tight slip. Coorie Doon is heading to Anacortes and then home, and ToG is aiming for Friday Harbor.
A wonderful buddy-boating experience!
