Not Boating

ToG remains in her slip until we find a window of opportunity to hit the water again. Other than a trip or two to Gig Harbor earlier this year, we haven’t plied the waters of the South Sound at all, and I am missing some of our favorite places.
In the meantime, we’ve been watching the windy weather from our home perch. Recently, gusts over thirty mph whipped Commencement Bay into a frenzy all day long. It was beautiful to see, with white caps in every direction and 4-foot waves pounding our little shoreline. This storm brought in all kinds of debris, filling the bay and piling up on the beach.
We’ve also been working on some projects. When we purchased our dinghy, we opted for a universal cover, knowing that it would likely need to be altered in some way to facilitate covering the dinghy while in place on the davit system. Although I am accomplished in the sewing department, I was not really looking forward to figuring out how to do this, let alone actually doing the work.
After some thinking and discussion with Nick, we landed on a solution. I had already cut and reinforced two holes for the davit cables. I removed the stretchy line (what a pain), cut openings between these holes and the edge of the cover, and sewed Velcro strips the length of each cut. I reinserted the line (total pain) and voila! Not the most elegant of dinghy covers but should do the trick.
After installing the dinghy cover, we took a walk along the Foss Waterway to see what's new. The Jefferson and Hood Street Surface Water Interceptor project seems near completion, at least near our slip, where the new outflow is located. This is the site of the future Melanie's Park and we are excited to see that work get underway.
A couple of boats showed up this summer while we were out. This lovely old tug:
And this. I was trying to make out the name...Pacific something...when Nick suggested Pacific Piece of Shit, which is really spot on. It's Pacific Producer. It's at the old Martinac Shipbuilding site...wonder what's up with it.
Also got to see one of my favorite tugs in action:
Another “project” is our ongoing efforts to get our new home outfitted and decorated the way we want. Now that we’re home again for extended periods over the winter, we are making decisions about what furniture we still need, what artwork to hang where, and finally unpacking décor that remained in boxes. I am especially excited to finally create a decent sewing and craft space! Still a work in progress…but getting closer.
We’ve been spending quality time with our grandsons – we are now in charge of getting Malcolm to and from swimming lessons each Tuesday afternoon. He’s doing great!
Had fun trick or treating with both boys...Spiderman and a spider!
Not sure when we'll get on the water again. We were considering going out over the next few days but are rethinking plans. Lots going on around here (sewing expo/bird walks with Tahoma Audobon), plus preparations for the busy holiday season!
